Dan is the founder and president of OSML, and has been a part of every project and capability here. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy (Annapolis), and completed a 30-year active and reserve career in the Navy, retiring at the rank of Captain (O-6). He has worked in both the private and public sector in roles of increasing responsibility in program management and budgeting, network architecture, systems engineering, and computer security. Dan is a registered Professional Engineer (Electrical) in the state of Washington, and is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP). He also is a member of IEEE. Dan is passionate about innovation and helping people to develop new skills, and created OSML as a way to bring that to our local community. He has also been very involved in building our community network through his efforts with Startup78, the San Diego Tech Hub, and the San Diego STEM Ecosystem.
Mary Alice Hendricks
Mary Alice is the Vice President of OSML. She earned her master’s degree in Public Administration from the Monterey Institute of International Studies and has experience managing grants and contracts from state and federal sources for a variety of clients both in the United States and in Third World countries. As grants and contracts compliance officer, Mary Alice was responsible for tracking program progress, monitoring and approving all budget expenditures, filing all progress and final program reports, and working closely with funding agencies to ensure the success and sustainability of the grants. Her work as the executive director of the San Diego Young Artists Symphony has helped develop her leadership skills in managing programs and people and placed her at the front of successful fund-raising efforts.
Bryan is the Chief Technology Officer at OSML, and has his hand in a several of the internal computer systems at OSML, while also teaching some of our programming and electronics courses. His initial experience in starting a FIRST Robotics team at High Tech High North County, and interning at the SPAWAR robotics lab led him to pursue and acquire a bachelors degree in Computer Engineering from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He now works as a software engineer at ViaSat – when he’s not teaching OSML courses – and plans to continue pursuing a career in the field of computer science.
Ariel is our lab manager, and works on a little bit of everything here at OSML. She joined our team in June of 2015, but has been an unofficial part of the lab since we opened. She graduated from UC San Diego with a bachelors in Marine Biology and a minor in general biology in June of 2018. While her main focus is in biology and conservation, she has a passion for learning new things and in gaining experience in engineering and design . Some of her work can be seen around the space, including our welded tool cart, a good majority of our new lab layout, and the custom-designed signage throughout the space. She is usually involved with as many group projects as possible, along with designing and fabricating items for our members. She also maintains all of our machines, and continually works on developing and maintaining safety protocols in the lab space.
